Visitation rules, schedules, and how to apply for visits

Visitation rules depend on the facility, so confirm the schedule where your loved one is housed. One county detention center holds visitation every Tuesday and Thursday (except holidays) from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Visits do not need to be scheduled in advance, but you can call the day before or the day of to reserve a time slot. All visitors must have photo identification.

Some facilities offer video visits with published session lengths and start times. One county correctional center limits visits to 20 minutes, beginning on the hour, at 20 minutes past, and at 40 minutes past. No visitation will begin before 8:00 a.m. or be allowed after 10:00 p.m. The same facility publishes specific onsite visiting time blocks across the week. ND DOCR also offers video visitation where onsite visits are free and remote visits are subject to a fee shown when you schedule.

  1. Complete the visitor application. Use the ND DOCR visitor application for approval.
  2. Mail it to the address listed for the facility. For example, the form lists a mailing address for Dakota Women’s Correctional and Rehabilitation Center (DWCRC) addressed to “ATTN: Visiting.”
  3. Track the expiration date. ND DOCR states the visitor application is valid for five years, then a new application must be completed and submitted.
  4. Decide between onsite and remote visits. ND DOCR states onsite video visits are free, while remote visits can have a fee noted at scheduling.
