Mail, photos, and books: allowed items and how they are processed

Mail rules are very facility-specific, so use the exact address format the jail provides. Cheshire County's inmate mail page lists the address as: "Cheshire County D.O.C., 825 Marlboro Road, Keene, NH 03431." Mail with stickers on the outside (except return address labels) will be returned to sender. Greeting cards are not authorized and will be returned or placed into inmate property.

Legal mail is handled differently than regular letters. At Cheshire County, privileged mail includes correspondence to or from attorneys, authorized representatives acting in their official capacities, legal aid services, or other agencies providing legal services. Incoming privileged mail is opened for inspection in the offender's presence but not read. Rockingham County states that legal correspondence will continue to be accepted under the prior process. In the federal system, the Bureau of Prisons classifies mail as "general" or "special," with general correspondence opened and inspected by staff for contraband and security-related content.
