Facility rules and civil process: what to expect at the door and for legal papers
Tip: Some Wisconsin institutions are strictly tobacco-free. Oshkosh Correctional Institution states that smoking or vaping is not allowed on institution grounds or in the parking lot, and tobacco cannot be stored in the lobby lockers, it must be secured in your vehicle.
If you need to have someone served with civil papers at a jail, the Sheriff's Office civil process unit usually has its own instructions and fees. In Manitowoc County, the Sheriff's Office says to send two copies of the documents, complete an information sheet, and include a $60 deposit per person. Send civil process materials to the Sheriff's Office (Attn: Civil Process) at 1025 S 9th St., Manitowoc, WI 54220. The county's fee schedule lists civil process as $60 minimum to $150 maximum per person. The $60 deposit includes one attempt or service, and they may charge $30 for each additional attempt (up to three), with mileage included. If the person you need served is a state inmate, Manitowoc County notes that documents must be sent through the Wisconsin Department of Corrections.
If your situation involves victim services or restitution, the county District Attorney's victim/witness program can be a starting point. Dunn County describes its Victim/Witness Assistance Program as a unit of the District Attorney's Office that provides information, support, and advocacy to victims of crime and witnesses for hearings. The program serves crime victims, witnesses, and family members of adult and juvenile offenders. To have the court consider ordering restitution on your behalf as part of a case disposition, you must submit a claim to the Victim Witness Assistance Program by the date requested.
