Common Questions

Q
Can I do a video visit from my home with someone in a West Virginia facility?

Yes, WV DOC’s video conversations can be done from your computer or mobile device (not only at the facility). To start, WV DOC’s video-visit handout directs you to schedule.telmate.com to log in with your phone number and PIN, and GettingOut also provides a help line at (866) 516-0115.

Q
Are inmate phone calls monitored in West Virginia facilities?

In the federal (BOP) system, calls are monitored, and BOP states a notice is posted by each inmate telephone advising inmates that calls are monitored. BOP also notes that unmonitored calls to attorneys are permitted in certain circumstances. BOP further states that third-party or other alternative call arrangements are not permitted.

Q
How do I get on an inmate's visiting list?

In the federal (BOP) system, you must be on the inmate’s approved visiting list before you can visit. The BP-A0629 visitor form says you may need to complete a questionnaire and release form and return it to the institution address listed on the form. For WV juvenile-services visiting requests, the visiting request form instructs you to mail the completed request to the WV Division of Corrections & Rehabilitation Bureau of Juvenile Services at 1409 Greenbrier Street, Charleston, WV 25311 (Attn: Visitors Request).

Q
Can I send photographs in a letter to someone incarcerated in West Virginia?

WV DOC states photographs are not allowed in letters, and envelopes containing photographs will be returned to the sender. If you are mailing a letter through WV DOC, address it using the incarcerated person’s full name and OID number and the full facility name, and send it to PO Box 336, Phoenix, MD 21131.
