What to expect at security screening for a visit to Farmington Correctional Center
Security screening at Farmington Correctional Center can feel intimidating if you've never been. Knowing what to expect—and how to prepare if you have a medical need—makes the whole process easier.
Security screening starts the moment you enter Farmington Correctional Center grounds. You, your packages, your children, and even your vehicle can all be checked. You'll also go through a metal detector - standard at all Missouri Department of Corrections facilities, including Farmington.
Heads up: You, your packages, your children, and your vehicle are all subject to search when you enter the grounds.
Expect a metal detector: Missouri DOC uses them at all facilities, including Farmington.
Beyond the metal detector, the department uses Intercept full-body scanners. If you're 18 or older, you'll go through one unless you have an approved exception. The scan is quick: you step inside, stand still, and the operator runs a short scan to check for concealed objects.
Note: Approved exceptions can include a verified medical condition or pregnancy.
Timing matters. You can arrive in the parking lot no earlier than 30 minutes before visiting starts - don't plan to show up hours ahead and wait on the grounds. Entry is first-come, first-served once visiting begins. For the smoothest check-in, time your drive so you're ready to park and line up right when that 30-minute window opens.
- ✓ Don’t leave any person in your vehicle on institutional grounds.
- ✓ Don’t leave pets in your vehicle on institutional grounds.
Need medication or medical equipment during your visit? Farmington allows certain supplies - but only under specific conditions. Items like nitroglycerin, insulin and insulin supplies, oxygen, or asthma inhalers must be in their original containers. Bring only what you need for the visiting period. Stick to the "original container, only what you need" rule, and staff can clear you through screening without hassle.
- Notify the institutional case manager ahead of time - Let them know you need to bring medical supplies so staff are aware of your needs.
- Keep medications and life-sustaining items in the original container - Don’t transfer pills or inhalers into another bottle or bag.
- Bring only the necessary dosage for the visit - Pack what you need for that visiting period, not extra.
Note: If you’re 18+ and have a verified medical condition - or you’re pregnant - you may have an approved exception to the full-body scanner requirement.
