How to Contact an Inmate at Facility

To contact an inmate through visits, phone, or video, you'll need to submit the Application to Visit an Inmate electronically through the Department site. Paper applications aren't the standard process. Plan on completing it online even if you're only trying to get set up for phone or video communication.

One exception can save you time: don't submit the application while the inmate is in intake at Alhambra or Perryville. Applications submitted during intake may not be processed. Wait until intake is complete before applying.

Note: Adult visitors applying for in-person, phone, or video visits must pay a one-time, non-refundable $25 background check fee. If you only want to accept phone calls (phone-only), the $25 fee is not required.

If you need to pay the visitation background fee, payments must be made electronically through approved vendors. Transaction fees vary by vendor and payment method, so your total cost will depend on how you pay.

How to Contact an Inmate at Facility

Steps to Follow

  • Submit the Application to Visit an Inmate electronically through the Department site.
  • If the inmate is currently in intake at Alhambra or Perryville, wait to submit your application until intake is finished (applications submitted during intake may not be processed).
  • If you are applying for in-person, phone, or video visits, be ready to pay the one-time, non-refundable $25 background check fee.
  • If you only want phone-only acceptance (receiving phone calls only), you can apply through the regular application process without paying the $25 fee.
  • Pay visitation background fees electronically using approved vendors only (Keefe, JPay, GTL/CheckFreePay, or GTL/Western Union).
  • Expect vendor transaction fees to vary by payment method, even when the background check fee itself is the same.

Before you submit, confirm you're using the current electronic submission process on the Department site. Also check whether the inmate is still in intake, especially at Alhambra or Perryville. Submitting during intake can mean your application won't be processed.

Double-check whether your situation requires the one-time, non-refundable $25 background check fee, or if you qualify for the phone-only exception. If you need to pay, confirm the current approved vendor options (Keefe, JPay, GTL/CheckFreePay, GTL/Western Union) and check the transaction fee rules for your chosen payment method.
