How Long Does It Take for Digital Mail to Reach an Inmate in Arizona?

In Arizona, digital mail means your physical letter gets scanned at a central location and delivered electronically for the inmate to view. Once Securus (the department's partner) receives your mail, they aim to have it processed, scanned, and available within 3 business days.

Once your mail arrives for digital processing, Securus aims to scan it and make it available within 3 business days. Here's what "delivered" actually means in this system: your original hardcopy letter is scanned at a central location, then sent to the inmate's secured electronic tablet or made available through an electronic kiosk.

Quick expectation: Securus aims to have digital mail processed, scanned, and available within 3 business days after they receive it.

No tablet? The inmate can still receive digital mail. According to ADCRR, inmates without tablets either access their mail through an electronic kiosk or receive a printed black-and-white copy.

The original physical mail doesn't go to the inmate after scanning. ADCRR says the contracted provider stores scanned originals for 90 days, then professionally disposes of them. If you want the physical items back, you'll need to request a return when you send the mail (see the steps below).

  1. Decide whether you want the originals returned - if you do, plan ahead before you mail the letter, card, or photos.
  2. Include a self-addressed, stamped envelope (SASE) - ADCRR says senders who want their physical mail returned after scanning must include a self-addressed and stamped envelope in their correspondence.
  3. Make the return envelope usable - address it to you, add postage, and choose an envelope size that can hold whatever you are sending so it can be mailed back as-is.

According to ADCRR, there's no added cost to senders or inmates for the digital mail service itself. You still pay your normal postage, and if you want originals returned, include a self-addressed stamped envelope.

Tips

  • If you’re sending personal mail (letters, photos, greeting cards) on or after December 15, 2025, send it to ADCRR’s Digital Processing Center at PO Box 211309, Dallas, TX 75211
  • If you want your original physical mail back after it’s scanned, include a self-addressed and stamped envelope with your correspondence
  • Build in time for processing. Securus aims to have mail processed, scanned, and made digitally available within 3 business days after it’s received

Since your original hardcopy mail gets scanned at a central location, the inmate receives a digital version on their tablet or kiosk. Addressing and preparing your mail correctly helps it move through scanning without delays.
