How to Get Your Physical Mail Returned After It's Scanned

Under ADCRR's digital mail system, your letter gets scanned and delivered electronically to your loved one. The physical pages don't automatically come back to you. If you want the originals returned, slip a self-addressed stamped envelope inside your mail. That SASE gives the processing center everything they need to send your pages back once scanning wraps up.

  • A self-addressed envelope with your full name and return address
  • Postage on that return envelope (stamped)
  • A return envelope big enough to hold what you’re sending
  • The inmate’s full name, inmate number, and the correct address written correctly on the envelope you’re mailing in (so the mail isn’t returned instead of delivered)

Physical originals don't stick around indefinitely. ADCRR's contracted provider holds scanned mail for 90 days, then professionally disposes of it. If getting those paper originals back matters to you, that 90-day window is your deadline.

Note: Originals are stored for just 90 days. Include your SASE with your correspondence so there's a way to return them before disposal.

Small addressing mistakes can derail everything. If the inmate number, full name, or facility address is wrong, your mail won't reach your loved one - it'll bounce back to you instead. Take a moment to double-check those details before sealing the envelope.

  1. Confirm the inmate’s full name - write it exactly as the facility has it.
  2. Confirm the inmate number - include it with the name.
  3. Write the correct address on the mailing envelope - if the name/number/address are wrong or missing, the mail is returned to sender.
  4. Add your SASE inside the correspondence - make sure it’s addressed back to you and stamped so your originals can be mailed back after scanning.

Return postage is your responsibility. No SASE means no way to get your originals back after scanning.

Arizona's New Digital Mail System: What Changed on December 15, 2025

As of December 15, 2025, most incoming letters to people in Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation and Reentry (ADCRR) facilities are routed to a Digital Processing Center in Texas. There, they're scanned and delivered digitally. This applies to regular personal mail - not legal mail, parcels, publications, or official government correspondence. For personal mail headed to ASPC-D Gila Unit, there's no limit on how much you can send. Once scanned, items are available on the recipient's secure tablet or through an electronic kiosk.

What the $25 Visitation Background Check Actually Costs (And How to Pay Less)

Applying to visit someone at ASPC Douglas Gila Unit? The $25 background check is real, required for most adult visitors, and non-refundable. It applies whether you're seeking in-person visits, phone privileges as a visitor, or video visits. The one exception: if you only want to receive phone calls from an inmate - without applying for visitation or video - you can skip the fee. Timing matters. Your background check payment and any supporting documents must arrive within 30 days of your application date. Miss that window, and your application is considered incomplete. It won't be processed. Waiting to pay doesn't just cost you $25 - it costs you time.
