What Happens If You Address Mail Wrong During Arizona’s Digital Mail Transition

Arizona is moving personal inmate mail to a Digital Processing Center in Texas starting December 15, 2025. If you accidentally send personal mail directly to a prison complex during the changeover, don't panic - ADCRR is offering a one-month grace period from December 15, 2025 through January 15, 2026. Mail sent the old way during this window will still be processed and delivered. Think of this grace period as a courtesy buffer while everyone adjusts to the new system. Already dropped something in the mailbox addressed the old way? If it falls within this timeframe, ADCRR says they'll handle it rather than bouncing it back immediately.

Note: The digital scanning change does not apply to legal mail, parcels, publications, or official government mail - those are handled differently than personal letters, greeting cards, and photos.

Once the grace period ends on January 15, 2026, the rules get stricter. Mail sent to inmates at prison complexes instead of the Digital Processing Center will be returned to sender. Addressing details matter. Your envelope needs the inmate's full name, their ADCRR number, and the correct address. Miss any of these - even something as simple as leaving off the inmate number or using the wrong destination - and your letter won't make it through.

Addressing Errors

  • Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation and Reentry
  • Inmate’s full first and last name + ADCRR number
  • Prison complex
  • Assigned unit
  • PO Box 211309
  • Dallas, TX 75211

The most common mistakes are simple ones: writing only a first name, forgetting the ADCRR number, or sending to a facility address instead of the Digital Processing Center. Any of these can prevent staff from matching your envelope to the right person. Once the grace period ends, mail missing the inmate number, full name, or correct address will be returned to you.
