Big Muddy River visiting-room checklist: what you can and can't bring

Leave electronics behind. Cell phones, tablets, and smart watches aren't allowed in the Visiting Room at Big Muddy River.

  • Food
  • Drink
  • Smoking materials
  • Currency
  • Packages
  • Purses
  • Bags
  • Books
  • Magazines
  • Sunglasses
  • Personal keys

Brought something you can't take inside? Small lockers in the Visiting Center are available at no charge. Just know you're responsible for anything you store - the facility won't cover lost or damaged items.

Medication rules are strict. No pills or medication of any type are allowed in the Visiting Room - except physician-prescribed heart medication or an asthma inhaler.

Heart medication reminder: If you need to bring physician-prescribed heart medication into the Visiting Room, it must be in a properly labeled container.

Baby Items

  • Three diapers and wipes
  • One blanket
  • Two filled clear plastic bottles, or two sealed containers of baby food (or one bottle + one sealed baby food)
  • One change of clothes
  • One bib
  • One pacifier
  • One plastic spoon
  • One clear empty cup with lid
  • One coat or jacket and one hat
  • One pair of gloves or mittens (during appropriate weather)
  • Store all baby items in a clear bag or plastic container

What you wear matters. Dresses, shorts, and skirts must extend to the knee. Show up in something shorter, and you'll be turned away.

Expect screening when you arrive on state property. Visitors, vehicles, and belongings are all subject to search. Refuse, and you could lose your visiting privileges - temporarily or permanently.

Disruptions have consequences: A Visiting Room Officer will give one warning for a minor rule violation; continued disruption must be reported and can lead to a written temporary restriction (up to six months) or a permanent restriction of visiting privileges.
