What 'proper attire' and electronics rules mean for visitors at Buchanan County Jail
Buchanan County Jail's clothing and electronics rules are straightforward—but they're enforced. A little planning before you go can save you from being turned away at the door.
Buchanan County Jail requires all visitors to wear
Tip: If you’re unsure whether an outfit will pass, dress more conservatively than you think you need to - being denied a visit usually comes down to avoidable details.
The electronics rule is simple: no cell phones or recording devices in the visitation area. There's one exception - professionals visiting a client can bring phones and recording devices, but only in non-contact visitation rooms. If you're visiting as family or a friend, leave your phone and anything that records audio or video completely outside the visitation area.
Reminder: Leave your phone and any recording device out of the visitation area - bringing them in can cost you the visit.
Certain visitors qualify as
- ✓ If you’re Division of Family Services or Probation and Parole: bring your official ID and a valid driver’s license
- ✓ If you’re clergy: bring your clergy card plus a current driver’s license or state ID
- ✓ If you’re a professional who needs a phone/recording device: remember devices are only allowed in non-contact visitation rooms (and only for professionals visiting a client)
- Dress with the “proper attire” rule in mind - If staff decide your clothing violates Sheriff’s Office policy, you can be removed and may lose future visitation privileges.
- Keep phones and recording devices out of visitation areas - Non-professional visitors are prohibited from bringing them into visitation areas.
- Call ahead if you have any doubt - A quick check before you drive over can prevent a wasted trip.
Before you go: You must be at least 18 years old and bring a current, accepted photo ID.
