Before Your First Visit: Butler County Prison's 5-person adult visitation list (what it means for families)

At Butler County Prison, each inmate fills out a visitation list with exactly five adult visitors. "Adult" means anyone 18 or older, and the list includes each person's name, address, and phone number. If you're not on that list, you won't get a visit - period. So before anything else, confirm you're one of the five adults the inmate has listed.

Note: Names on an inmate’s visitation list are confidential. Staff won’t release who is (or isn’t) on someone else’s list.

Here's another scheduling wrinkle: inmates get one visit per day. Even if you're on the list, coordinate with other visitors so your time slot doesn't overlap with someone else's.

Only the inmate can change the visitation list, and changes are limited to once every 30 days. You can't call in to add yourself, and families can't quickly swap names if plans shift. If all five slots are filled, timing matters - the inmate may need to wait until their next allowed update.

Note: The list is confidential - the prison won't share who's on it. The inmate is your only reliable source for who's currently listed and when changes can happen.

  1. Ask the inmate to add you to their five-adult list - if you’re not listed, a visit won’t be scheduled.
  2. Wait for the inmate to contact you with a visit time - the inmate is responsible for scheduling the visit with you.
  3. Make sure the inmate confirms the time with the Pod Correction Officer - the inmate must notify the Pod Correction Officer of the scheduled time to make sure that time is open for a visit.

Trying to get added? Plan ahead. Since the inmate can only update the list every 30 days, even a simple change can take time depending on when they last made an edit.

The five-person list determines who's allowed to visit - but it doesn't mean five people can show up at once. Butler County Prison caps visits at three visitors per inmate. Minors with a parent or legal guardian don't need to be on the list, but they still count toward that three-person limit. If you're bringing kids, factor them into the headcount.

Example: One adult plus two minors is three visitors total - so that would hit the per-visit limit even though the minors don’t need to be on the inmate’s list.

  • Bring photo ID - it must be presented upon entry (no exceptions).
  • Check in with the lobby officer when you arrive.
  • Present your photo identification and tell the officer which inmate you’re there to see.
  • Don’t bring personal property for the inmate - photos, clothing, money, and other items won’t be accepted at visitation.

Visitation runs smoothly when scheduling and check-in align. The inmate schedules the visit with you and notifies the Pod Correction Officer of the time. When you arrive, check in with the lobby officer, show your photo ID, and state which inmate you're visiting.
