Setting Up Video Visits at Chippewa: Step-by-Step (GTL)

You must already be on the prisoner's Approved Visitor List before you can request a video visit at Chippewa. Video visit requests only become available once the facility has begun online scheduling - being approved is the first step, and there's no way around it.

Not sure where to begin? Start with the Michigan Department of Corrections video visitation information. That's where you'll find the overall standards, details on the GTL-based process, and confirmation of whether the facility has begun online scheduling.

  1. Go to the GTL Visitor website - use the GTL Visitor site as your starting point for account setup.
  2. Create your GTL Visitor account - set up your account as the approved visitor so GTL can tie requests to your identity.
  3. Complete any required account prompts - follow the on-screen instructions until your account setup is finished.
  1. Request to visit the prisoner at their assigned facility - inside your GTL Visitor account, select the correct facility and the person you want to visit.
  2. Wait for GTL approval if prompted - once you’re approved on the GTL site, you’ll be able to request scheduled video visits for prisoners at that facility.
  3. Submit the visit request through GTL - follow the GTL prompts to finish the request.

Scheduling Window Length Payment

  • You can schedule a video visit no more than 7 days in advance.
  • You can’t schedule a visit within 48 hours of the visit time.

Video visits are 20 minutes long. Plan around that fixed length so you're ready to start on time and can make the most of your conversation.

Payment reminder: A scheduled 20-minute video visit costs $3.20, and the person who schedules it has to pay for it in advance.

GTL won't let you move forward? Check the basics: you must be on the prisoner's Approved Visitor List, and the facility has to be participating in online scheduling before video visit requests will work.

If something doesn't seem to stick, slow down and follow the GTL prompts step by step - especially on the account request and checkout screens. Remember: the visit has to be prepaid by the person scheduling it. An unpaid request won't result in a confirmed visit.

Note: For the current video visitation standards and any facility-specific scheduling status, use the Michigan Department of Corrections video visitation guidance as your reference point before you schedule.
