Sending mail to Chippewa Valley: use TextBehind for personal mail, send legal mail to the facility

Personal mail to someone at Chippewa Valley Corrections (CVCTF) goes through TextBehind, not directly to the facility. Send it to: P.O. Box 189, Phoenix, MD 21131. On the envelope, include your return name and address, along with the recipient's full name (first and last), their DOC number, and the correctional facility name. Missing or incomplete information means your mail gets returned as undeliverable. If you accidentally send personal mail straight to the institution, they'll return it so you can re-mail through TextBehind.

Legal (privileged) mail follows different rules. Under DOC guidance, legal mail includes correspondence identifiably addressed to or from verified people or entities using their official business address. This covers attorneys or law offices, clerks or judges of any state or federal court (including court staff), and Tribal Courts. It also includes correspondence with certain state and federal officials: the Governor of Wisconsin, members of the Wisconsin legislature, members of the United States Congress, the Attorney General, the Secretary of the DOC, the DAI Division Administrator, federal investigative agencies, Foreign Consular Offices, and the President of the United States. Send this type of mail directly to the facility address using the facility's return address. Don't route it through TextBehind.

TextBehind doesn't keep original mail forever. After scanning, the original contents, envelopes, and any pre-paid self-addressed envelopes are shredded by a third-party service certified by the National Security Agency. This happens 30 days after TextBehind scans the mail.

What does this mean for you? Send personal mail to TextBehind knowing it will be scanned and delivered, but the physical originals will be destroyed on a set timeline. Cards, photographs, and other non-privileged items all go through this process. Keep copies of anything you wouldn't want permanently lost.
