What You Can't Wear to an Onsite Visit at Clay County Jail: Dress Code Checklist
Clay County Jail has strict dress code rules for onsite visits. Show up in the wrong outfit and you'll be turned away at the door. Staff can also end your visit early if they decide your clothing is inappropriate.
Leave anything ripped, torn, or intentionally altered at home. If it looks like you modified it on purpose, staff probably won't let you into the visitation area.
- ✓ Tank tops
- ✓ Halter tops
- ✓ Camisoles
- ✓ Any top that shows cleavage
- ✓ Cut-off shorts
- ✓ Spandex shorts
Staff have discretion here. Even if something isn't on a specific banned list, you can still be turned away for clothing they consider inappropriate. Tight-fitting shirts, blouses, or pants tend to cause problems. Same goes for T-shirts with offensive slogans or artwork.
For men, the basics: wear a shirt, trousers, and shoes. Show up missing any of these and you won't make it past the front desk.
Shorts are fine as long as they hit mid-thigh or below. Cut-offs and spandex shorts are off-limits, even if the length seems okay. Stick with regular shorts to be safe.
For women, keep it conservative. Shorts need to be mid-thigh or longer. Dresses and skirts should fall below the knee. Bathing suits and lingerie-style tops won't get you through the door.
Getting admitted doesn't guarantee you'll finish your visit. The supervising detention officer - or anyone higher up - can end things early for rule violations, misconduct, or emergencies. Follow the rules the whole time you're there.
Show up appearing intoxicated or high and you won't be allowed in. Arrive sober.
Refusing a search ends your visit before it starts. If staff ask you to comply with an authorized search procedure, you need to cooperate or you're going home.
Warning: Violating visitation rules can lead to a permanent loss of visitation privileges.
Practical Tips
- ✓ Do a quick mirror check before you leave: no torn/altered clothing, no tight-fitting tops or bottoms, and nothing that could be seen as inappropriate
- ✓ If you’re wearing shorts, make sure they’re mid-thigh or longer - and not cut-offs or spandex
- ✓ Avoid sleeveless or revealing tops (tank tops, halter tops, camisoles, and tops that show cleavage)
- ✓ Wear shoes (especially important for female visitors, since conservative clothing and shoes are required)
- ✓ Don’t drink or use drugs before you go; if you appear under the influence, you can be denied
- ✓ Be ready to follow lawful, authorized search procedures onsite
When in doubt, dress more conservatively than you think necessary. Staff can deny entry for inappropriate clothing, and the supervising officer can cut your visit short if problems come up.
