Which Address to Use When Sending Mail to Someone at Clay County Jail (and Why it Matters)

Clay County Jail uses a third party to process all incoming inmate mail. Why? To reduce the risk of contraband entering the facility. All incoming mail is opened, inspected, and may be read to check for contraband or rule violations.

Here's what that means for you: most standard letters from friends and family no longer go to the jail's street address. They must be mailed to an out-of-state PO Box for third-party processing - otherwise, they can be rejected.

For standard (non-legal) mail from friends and family, use this address. Include both the inmate's name and ID number on the first line: Inmate Name – [Inmate ID#] Clay County Jail, FL PO Box 76550 Highland Heights, KY 41076

Note: This PO Box is for standard non-legal friends and family correspondence. Legal mail and money orders use the jail’s physical street address instead.

For legal mail, packages, and publications, use the jail's physical street address. Include the inmate's name and ID number so staff can match it to the right person: Inmate Name – [Inmate ID#] Clay County Jail 901 North Orange Avenue Green Cove Springs, FL 32043

Warning: Money orders and legal mail that aren’t sent to 901 North Orange Avenue in Green Cove Springs can be returned to sender.

Even when using the physical address for packages and publications, your mail still has to meet format rules. It must be no larger than 8.5 x 11 inches, no thicker than light card stock, and able to run through a sheet-fed scanner.

This dual-address system goes into effect on 2/24/2025. After that date, mail must go to the correct address for its type - send it elsewhere and it'll be rejected.

Send to the wrong address or ignore the guidelines, and you'll waste time and money. Mail may be rejected, returned, or destroyed without being returned. And if you send certified mail requiring the inmate's signature, it gets sent back automatically.

Practical Checklist

  • Pick the right destination: standard friends/family mail goes to the PO Box; legal mail, packages, publications, and money orders go to 901 North Orange Avenue in Green Cove Springs.
  • Put the inmate’s name and inmate ID number on the envelope.
  • Add a return address on the envelope.
  • Keep it letter-size (8.5 x 11 inches or smaller).
  • Don’t send anything thicker than light card stock.
  • Make sure what you send can run through a sheet-fed scanner.
