Visiting with Kids: Collin County's Age and Relationship Rules (and the One‑Adult Limit)

Bringing a child to visit someone at Collin County Detention Facility? Two rules shape everything: only one adult can visit an inmate per day, and kids are admitted only if they meet specific age and relationship requirements—and only when there's room.

Visiting with Kids: Collin County's Age and Relationship Rules (and the One‑Adult Limit)

Collin County allows only one adult visitor per inmate each visitation day. If two adults plan to come with a child, you’ll need to decide ahead of time which adult will be the visitor for that day - because the facility won’t admit a second adult to visit that same inmate.

Children can visit, but only on a space-available basis - even if you meet all the requirements, you might be turned away if there's no room that day. For eligibility: children age 16 and younger may visit only if they're the child of the inmate or the child of the adult visitor. One exception: the "child of the inmate or visitor" rule doesn't apply if you're legally married to the inmate.

"Space available" means exactly what it sounds like: children get in only if there's capacity during that visitation period. This makes planning crucial - especially if you're traveling far or have limited childcare options. Build extra time into your day when visiting with kids, because the facility can't guarantee space for every family every session.

  • Arrive 20 minutes before the scheduled visitation time.
  • Make sure you’re signed up to visit at least 20 minutes before visitation begins - late visitors won’t be permitted.

Don't forget the basics: every visitor needs valid photo ID to get a visitor's pass. The facility accepts a current driver's license or Texas Department of Public Safety ID. Show up without acceptable ID and your visit ends before it starts - no matter who you're bringing with you.

Time check: Visits are 25 minutes long, with five additional minutes added for walking time to the cluster.

Before planning a visit with a child, confirm that everyone is on the inmate's visitation list. If you're not on the list, you won't get in. On the day of the visit, timing matters too: you must be signed up at least 20 minutes before visitation begins. Late arrivals aren't allowed back to visitation.

Note: The Sheriff’s Office can deny any visit if there’s reason to believe it isn’t in the best interest of the safety and security of the facility.
