Bring two forms of identification. One must be a current, state-issued photo ID. Originals only - showing up without the right ID is the fastest way to lose your visiting time.

Have your vehicle information ready at check-in. First-time visitors will also need to complete a Prospective Visitor's Interview (PVI) form (DOC 0148) unless you already have prior electronic PVI approval.

Accidentally brought something you can't take inside? Small lockers are available in the Visiting Center - free to use - where you can store personal items during your visit.

Pills and medications aren't allowed in the visiting room, with two exceptions: physician-prescribed heart medication and a physician-prescribed asthma pump (inhaler). Anything else needs to be secured before you enter.

Note: If you bring physician-prescribed heart medication, it must be in a properly labeled container.

Religious headgear is permitted if it can be removed and thoroughly searched. This includes kufis, yarmulkes, turbans, habits, and fezzes - just be prepared to indicate the item's religious significance.

Need to wear headgear that isn't on the permitted list? Submit a written request to the Chief Administrative Officer at least 10 days before your visit. You'll only be allowed to wear it if that request is approved.

  1. Decide whether your item fits a stated exception - For medications, only physician-prescribed heart medication or a physician-prescribed inhaler are allowed in the visiting room.
  2. Prepare the item for screening - If you’re wearing religious headgear, be ready to remove it for a thorough search and clearly explain its religious significance.
  3. Request approval early when required - For headgear not specifically listed as permitted, submit a written request to the Chief Administrative Officer at least 10 days before your visit and wait for approval.
  4. Keep required medication in the required container - If you bring heart medication, it must be in a properly labeled container.
