What You Can and Can't Bring to Danville Correctional Center: Visitor Checklist

Many visits get off to a stressful start because of something small: an ID issue or a phone left in a pocket. Use the checklist below to walk in prepared and leave everything else secured.

Adult visitors need two forms of identification. One must be a current, state-issued photo ID. Show up without both, or with an expired ID, and you can be turned away before you ever reach the Visiting Room.

Adult visitors also need to provide vehicle information at check-in. Even if you're being dropped off or arriving with someone else, staff may still ask for details about how you got there.

You don't have to choose between "bring nothing" and "risk losing your stuff." Free lockers are available in the Visiting Center, so you can store personal items that aren't allowed inside the Visiting Room.

  • Electronic devices (cell phones, tablets, smart watches)
  • Food and drink
  • Smoking materials and tobacco products
  • Currency (cash)
  • Packages
  • Purses, bags
  • Books and magazines
  • Sunglasses
  • Personal keys

Medication is one of the most common reasons people get stopped at the door. At Danville Correctional Center, no pills or medication of any type are permitted in the Visiting Room. The only exceptions: physician-prescribed heart medication and a physician-prescribed asthma pump (inhaler). If what you need doesn't fit those categories, leave it secured outside.

Reminder: Physician-prescribed heart medication must be in a properly labeled container. Check that the label is intact and readable before you arrive.

Some religious head coverings are permitted, but expect to remove them for a thorough search. The items specifically allowed (after removal and search) are a kufi, yarmulke, turban, habit, or fez.

  1. Write your request to the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO): Ask for permission to wear religious headgear that is not a kufi, yarmulke, turban, habit, or fez.
  2. Send it at least 10 days before your visit: Requests have to be submitted at least 10 days ahead.
  3. Wait for approval before bringing it: Other headgear may be allowed only after the CAO approves the request.
