What You Can't Bring Into the IDOC Visiting Room — and Where to Store It
Pack light for a smoother check-in. Here's what IDOC won't let you bring into the Visiting Room—and where to stash your stuff when you get there.
Quick Checklist
- ✓ Electronic devices (cell phones, tablets, smart watches)
- ✓ Food or drink
- ✓ Purses
- ✓ Bags
- ✓ Books
- ✓ Magazines
- ✓ Sunglasses
- ✓ Personal keys
Bring two forms of identification if you’re an adult visitor. One of those IDs must be a current, state-issued photo ID.
IDOC Visiting Centers have small lockers for personal items that aren't allowed in the Visiting Room. Assume anything on the prohibited list will need to stay outside - either in a locker or left behind before you enter.
Note: IDOC confirms lockers are available, but exact sizes and any fees aren't always posted. Bring only what you need and follow staff directions when you arrive.
Expect security checks. You, your vehicle, and anything you bring onto State property are all subject to search.
You'll go through a body search at the Visitor Center. If staff suspect you're intoxicated or under the influence of alcohol or drugs, you won't be allowed in.
Contraband warning: If a visitor is found in possession of contraband (including weapons or drugs), they’ll be prohibited from visiting and may be reported to the State Police. Criminal charges may also be filed.
Practical Tips
- ✓ Leave electronic devices (phone, tablet, smart watch) at home or secured in your vehicle
- ✓ Don’t bring purses, bags, books, magazines, sunglasses, or extra keys into the Visiting Center if you can avoid it
- ✓ If you do arrive with personal items, plan to place them in the small lockers in the Visiting Center before you go into the Visiting Room
- Pack your IDs first - Bring two forms of identification, and make sure one is a current state-issued photo ID.
- Have your vehicle information ready - You’ll be asked to provide it when you arrive.
- Build in a few extra minutes - Give yourself time to secure personal items in a locker so you’re not sorting things out at the front of the line.
Keep it simple: Your belongings and vehicle may be searched, and you'll be turned away if you're under the influence. If something could look like contraband, leave it at home.
