The Seven-Day Wait: Why You Can't Visit Right Away at Tulsa County Jail
If you try to visit someone right after they're booked into the David L. Moss Criminal Justice Center, you'll likely be turned away. The jail requires a waiting period tied to background processing, and only a few people can get access during that time.
At Tulsa County Jail (the David L. Moss Criminal Justice Center), visitors cannot visit during the first seven (7) days of an inmate's detention while the background check is being processed. This applies to everyone, including immediate family members and first-time visitors.
The background processing is tied to the DLM Visitor's Request Form. The jail uses the information you submit to run a background check, and they'll approve or deny your request within 10 days of receiving it. Bottom line: there's a built-in delay at the start, and it's connected to that approval process.
Exceptions
- ✓ Attorneys
- ✓ Approved clergy members
- ✓ Bondspersons
If you fall into one of those exception categories, visiting hours run between 0800 and 1900. All visitation stops after 1900 until 0800 the next day.
Even for these exceptions, entry rules still apply. Visitors must register on entry into the facility, and all visitors will be searched using hand-held and stationary scanners. If a visitor refuses the search, they will not be allowed access to the facility.
While you're waiting on visitation approval, your loved one may still be able to reach you by phone. After booking processing, inmates can make calls to arrange bond payment or notify friends and family.
- Complete and submit the DLM Visitor’s Request Form. Anyone wanting to visit an inmate must submit this form before scheduling a visit.
- Wait for the background-check decision. The form information is used to perform a background check, and the jail says a decision to approve or deny will be made within 10 days of receipt.
- Schedule your visit after approval. Once you receive the approval notification, you may schedule a visit.
Note: Only immediate family members (parents, spouses, and children) will be approved for visiting. Children may be accompanied by a legal or court-appointed guardian, and documented proof of your relationship is required at the time of your visit.
After you submit the Visitor’s Request Form, the jail uses it to run a background check and says it will make an approval or denial decision within 10 days of receiving it. Once you’re approved, you can move forward with scheduling.
- Make sure your Visitor’s Request Form is submitted. Submitting the DLM Visitor’s Request Form is required before you can schedule a visit.
- Schedule your visit after you’re approved. The jail allows scheduling once you receive the approval notification.
- Plan around the weekly limits. Visitors cannot visit more than one inmate per week, and each inmate is allowed one visit per week unless a special visit is granted in writing by the Jail Administrator.
Reminder: You must register when you enter, and you will be searched using hand-held and stationary scanners. If you refuse the search, you will not be allowed access to the facility.
