How to Visit Facility
Visiting someone at the David L Moss Criminal Justice Center is straightforward once you know the rules. A few things can stop a visit before it starts, so here's what to know about restrictions, the approval process, and what happens when you arrive.
First, the hard stops. If you're wearing an ankle monitor, you won't be allowed in. Every visitor goes through security screening with both a hand-held device and a stationary metal detector. If you can't clear the screening, staff will deny entry.
The facility limits visits to manage traffic and security. You can only visit one inmate per week, and each inmate gets one visit per week unless the Jail Administrator grants a written exception. Visiting a juvenile inmate? That's more restricted. Only a parent or guardian can visit, and you'll need to bring proof of guardianship or a birth certificate.
Attorneys (and their representatives), bondspersons, and TCSO volunteer clergy can visit between 0800 and 1900. After 1900, all visitation stops until 0800 the next day.
Note: No personal items are allowed past the last metal detector, including cell phones, food, beverages, and tobacco products.
Expect two layers of check-in. All visitors register when they enter the facility. Separately, you'll need to submit a Visitor's Request Form, which authorizes a criminal background check. Approval or denial comes within 10 days of receipt, so plan ahead.
Steps to Follow
- ✓ Submit a Visitor's Request Form and expect a criminal background check as part of the approval process.
- ✓ Allow up to 10 days for an approval or denial decision.
- ✓ Make sure you are approved before trying to visit.
- Register when you enter. All visitors must register on entry into the facility.
- Complete security screening. You will be searched using a hand-held scanning device and a stationary metal detector, and you can be denied entry if you cannot successfully pass through.
- Stop personal items before the last metal detector. Do not carry cell phones, food, beverages, tobacco products, or other personal items past the final screening point.
- ✓ If you are an attorney (or representative), bondsperson, or TCSO volunteer clergy, plan your visit between 0800 and 1900. After 1900 visitation stops until 0800 the next day.
- ✓ Follow the weekly limit: you cannot visit more than one inmate per week, and each inmate is allowed one visit per week unless an exception is granted.
- ✓ For juvenile inmates, only a parent or guardian can visit. Bring proof of guardianship or a birth certificate to present at the time of visitation.
Need a visit beyond the normal weekly limits? Ask about a special visit. The facility only allows exceptions when the Jail Administrator grants written approval.
What to Verify
- ✓ Confirm the current Visitor's Request Form approval timeline and whether the 10-day decision window applies to your situation.
- ✓ Ask what counts as “receipt” of the form (so you know when the 10 days starts).
- ✓ Confirm the visiting hours that apply to your visitor category (attorney/representative, bondsperson, or TCSO volunteer clergy).
- ✓ Ask whether there are any exceptions to the 0800 to 1900 window or any days when visits stop earlier.
- ✓ Confirm the exact screening process at the entrance (hand-held scanner and stationary metal detector) and what happens if you cannot pass.
- ✓ Ask for the current list of items you cannot take past the last metal detector (including phones, food, beverages, and tobacco).
- ✓ Verify the policy that visitors on ankle monitors are denied entry, so you do not make the trip unnecessarily.
- ✓ Verify the one-visit-per-inmate-per-week rule and the rule that a visitor cannot visit more than one inmate per week.
- ✓ Ask how to request a written special visit from the Jail Administrator, and what information must be included.
- ✓ For juvenile visitation, confirm exactly which documents you should bring (proof of guardianship, birth certificate, or other court paperwork) and when they must be presented.
