What You Absolutely Cannot Bring into Dayton Correctional (and what you can bring for a baby)
Dayton Correctional is strict about what you can bring onto facility grounds. Show up with the wrong items and you could lose time at the door, or get turned away entirely. Pack light, follow the clear-bag rules if you're bringing an infant, and leave everything else behind.
Dayton Correctional's visiting rules and the ODRC Declaration of Understanding list several common items that are not allowed on facility grounds or in the visitation area. The biggest trip-ups? Cash, cell phones and other electronic devices, and personal bags (purses, handbags, backpacks). Leave these at home or lock them in your vehicle before you walk up. Otherwise, you'll be turning around at the entrance.
- ✓ Cash
- ✓ Cell phones and other electronic communication devices
- ✓ Smart watches, pagers, and other electronic devices
- ✓ Purses, handbags, backpacks, or similar items
Reminder: All visitors are searched when entering Dayton Correctional. Showing up with prohibited items can slow you down at the door and may keep you from getting into your visit.
Cash is specifically prohibited on facility grounds. That catches some visitors off guard because vending machines are often part of the visit experience. At Dayton Correctional, the vending machines don't take cash anyway. They only accept credit and debit cards.
Tip: If you plan to use the vending machines, bring a credit or debit card. Do not bring cash onto facility grounds.
ODRC has a zero-tolerance policy for contraband. That means drugs, alcohol, and weapons. If you have anything like that on you, even by accident, do not come onto the grounds with it.
Warning: Attempting to convey drugs, alcohol, or weapons into Dayton Correctional can lead to serious legal and disciplinary consequences.
Bringing an infant? The bag rules get more specific. You're allowed to use a clear bag as a diaper bag for baby supplies during visitation. Pack only what's permitted, and keep everything in clear containers so staff can inspect it quickly at entry.
- ✓ A reasonable number of diapers
- ✓ Baby wipes (kept in a clear bag or clear container)
- ✓ Up to three clear plastic baby bottles
- ✓ Up to three clear plastic containers of baby food
- ✓ One pacifier
Keep it within the limits: Bottles and baby food must be in clear plastic, and counts are capped (three bottles, three baby-food containers, one pacifier). Anything extra can be refused at the door.
- Pack like you are bringing nothing. Leave cash, phones, smart watches, and any other electronic devices at home or locked in your vehicle.
- Skip the bag. Do not bring a purse, handbag, backpack, or similar item into the visit.
- Use a clear diaper bag for infant items. Keep wipes, bottles, and baby food in clear containers and stay within the allowed quantities so inspection is quick.
Plan for screening: Searches are routine for all visitors. The easiest way to avoid delays is to arrive with empty pockets and no prohibited items.
