Not immediate family? You may still be able to visit through GDC's "significant relationship" process. The key thing: the offender has to start it, not you. They complete a Significant Relationship Visitor Application for Visitation Privilege, which goes to the Warden or Superintendent for review. Once a decision is made, the offender gets notified and lets you know whether you were approved.
Don't wait until the last minute for a weekend visit. Weekend visitation requests for Dodge State Prison must be submitted by 5:00 PM on Wednesday of that same week.
Holiday visits have a different cutoff. State holiday visitation requests must be submitted by 5:00 PM, three days before the holiday.
The fastest way to lose a visit? Anything connected to contraband. The Georgia Department of Corrections can refuse visitation to anyone suspected of, caught with, or attempting to introduce contraband into the facility. Even suspicion alone can be enough to stop a visit, so keep your trip clean and straightforward.
Your paperwork and behavior matter, too. Visitation can be denied or revoked if someone is found to be deceptive on the significant relationship form. The same goes for repeated warnings about a particular action that keeps happening.
Note: GDC may suspend visitation privileges to meet special security needs at the facility. If you're traveling any distance, plan with the possibility of last-minute changes.
If a visitation decision goes against you, know the limits of the complaint process. The Ombudsman unit does not have the authority to overturn a Warden's visitation decision in this area.
Before you travel, confirm you're heading to the right place with the right identifiers. GDC's Find an Offender tool lets you look up the offender's facility location, charges, and release date. Having the correct facility and GDC ID in front of you can save a wasted trip if the person has been moved or you were given outdated information.
