Durham County Detention's Two-Address Mail System: Where to Send What
Durham County Detention uses two different mailing addresses depending on what you're sending. Personal letters go to an offsite mailscan P.O. Box in Phoenix, Maryland. Legal mail, books, and packages still go to a Durham, North Carolina P.O. Box.
As of February 1, 2023, Durham County Detention Center no longer processes personal mail on-site. All personal correspondence now goes through a "mailscan" system run by ViaPath Technologies - your letter is scanned offsite, then delivered digitally to the person in custody.
Note: Personal mail sent to the old Durham address gets returned to sender. Make sure you're using the Phoenix, MD address for all personal correspondence.
For personal correspondence, address your envelope exactly like this: Durham County Detention Center, NC Recipient Name and ID Number P.O. Box 247 Phoenix, MD 21131
- ✓ Use the recipient’s name
- ✓ Include the recipient’s ID number
- ✓ Send it to: Durham County Detention Center, NC, P.O. Box 247, Phoenix, MD 21131
