ID and Paperwork

  • Bring two forms of identification if you’re an adult visitor (age 18+)
  • Make sure one ID is a current state-issued photo ID

You'll need to provide your vehicle information at check-in. Have the make, model, and plate number ready before you walk up to the Visiting Center desk.

  1. Arrive at least 10 minutes early - Give yourself a buffer so you’re there before your scheduled visit time and not rushing through check-in.

Banned Restricted Items

  • Electronic devices (cell phones, tablets, smart watches)
  • Food
  • Drinks
  • Smoking materials and tobacco products
  • Currency
  • Packages
  • Purses
  • Bags
  • Books
  • Magazines
  • Sunglasses
  • Personal keys

IDOC is strict about medication in the Visiting Room. Only physician-prescribed heart medication or a physician-prescribed asthma inhaler is allowed - no other pills or meds. If you bring heart medication, keep it in a properly labeled container so staff can verify it.

Note: If you’re visiting with an infant or you’ll need accommodations like breastfeeding or special items, confirm the facility’s current rules before you go so you’re not surprised at the door.

Most first-visit problems start with prohibited items. Before leaving home - and again before getting out of your car - check for electronics, food or drinks, tobacco products, currency, and bags or purses. Any of these can slow you down or end your visit before it begins.

Tip: If you’re unsure about an item, leave it in your vehicle. Fewer personal items usually means a faster check-in and fewer problems at the door.
