What Happens If Your Visiting Application Is Denied? How to Appeal and When to Reapply

Start by reading every page of the denial paperwork. If visiting sanctions were imposed, the institution sends a written notice spelling out the infraction and sanctions. Those details matter - they tell you exactly what you're appealing and what you need to address. Next, gather anything that supports your side or clears up the issue that got you denied. Missouri requires visitors to be pre-approved through an application, and a criminal history check factors into the decision. Be ready with documentation that speaks directly to whatever was flagged.

Tip: Keep copies of your denial notice and everything you send with your appeal. The decision is sent in writing, and having a complete paper trail helps you stay organized if you need to follow up later.

How to Submit Appeal

  • Submit your appeal letter within 30 days of the denial date.
  • Reference the denial and respond to the reason given.
  • Include any supporting documents that back up what you’re saying.
  • Add your contact information so the department can match your appeal to your application.

Mail your appeal letter to: Missouri Department of Corrections Attn: Deputy Division Director of Adult Institutions 2729 Plaza Drive, PO Box 236 Jefferson City, MO 65102 You may also see the same street address and PO Box listed with a different ZIP code (65109) in some visiting sanctions materials. If your denial packet includes a sanctions notice, double-check the ZIP shown there and use the address exactly as it appears on your paperwork.

Once your appeal arrives, the department reviews all the information connected to your visiting status. You won't be left wondering - the final decision comes to you in writing.

Note: If your denial involves visiting sanctions, the institution’s written notice should outline the infraction and the sanctions imposed. Hold onto that notice - it’s the clearest summary of what the facility says happened.

If you're denied, you can reapply after one year. Before submitting again, review your original denial paperwork so you don't repeat the same issue.
