Visiting with Children at ERDCC: Application Steps and Rules for Minors
Bringing a child to visit takes extra planning. Here are the ERDCC and Missouri DOC rules that trip families up most often: how to submit the online application for a minor, how kids count toward the visitor limit, and what physical contact is allowed.
When filling out the online visitor application for a minor child, there's a specific ID workaround the Missouri DOC system expects. Under Identification Number, choose "other" for the Identification Type, then enter "NA" for the Identification Number. This is the standard method for submitting an application for a child who doesn't have a qualifying ID.
Important: Don't submit an online application for a minor if the person you're visiting is restricted to "Adult Only." If you're unsure whether that restriction applies, contact the institutional case manager before submitting anything.
Kids count toward visitor limits. Under Missouri DOC rules, each visit is limited to 3 visitors per offender. On top of that, you can bring up to 3 additional visitors who are age 5 and under. If you're planning a group visit, count heads carefully so you don't get turned away at check-in.
Note: Some facilities use a different child-age cutoff. WERDCC, for example, allows up to 3 additional visitors age 10 and under (for a total of 6 visitors). Because these limits can be facility-specific, confirm the current rule for your situation before you travel.
Lap-sitting is allowed in a limited way. Children age 6 and under may sit on the offender's lap during visits, unless the offender is a sex offender. Keep children close and supervised so the visit doesn't get interrupted.
Physical contact is limited to a few specific moments. You're allowed one greeting embrace and a brief kiss, plus one departing embrace and a brief kiss. Holding hands during the visit is permitted.
Practical Tips Children
- ✓ Necessary medical supplies or medications for the visiting period, kept in the original container (notify the case manager in advance)
- ✓ Infant supplies (bring only what you actually need for the visit)
- ✓ Coins for vending machines, placed in a clear sandwich bag or a transparent plastic pouch
- Plan for medical needs ahead of time: If your child (or you) will need medication or medical equipment during the visit, give notice to the case manager in advance so staff are aware.
- Bring meds the right way: Keep medications or required medical items in the original container, and bring only the necessary dosage for the visiting period.
- Tell staff when you arrive: If medication will be needed during visitation, notify staff upon arrival so there are no surprises mid-visit.
- Double-check eligibility for minors: If the person you are visiting may be restricted to “Adult Only,” contact the institutional case manager before you try to apply for the child or make the trip.
