What to Expect During Check-In at ERDCC: Arrival, Screening and First-Come Rules

Your first visit to ERDCC can feel stressful. There are strict timing rules, screening procedures, and a few things you need to know before you show up. Here's what to expect at arrival, what to bring, and how security screening works.

At ERDCC, you can arrive in the facility parking lot no earlier than 30 minutes before visiting starts. If you show up much earlier than that, plan on waiting off-site until you’re within that window.

Entry is first-come, first-served. The order you arrive is the order you'll be processed, so showing up right at that 30-minute mark helps you avoid a long wait in line.

Bring a valid government-issued photo ID. Missouri DOC lists examples like a current driver's license or a Department of Revenue ID card. Staff will verify your ID during sign-in.

Security screening is similar to what you'd experience at an airport. Missouri DOC uses the Intercept full-body scanner at adult institutions, along with walk-through metal detectors, hand-held metal detectors, and X-ray baggage scanners. Be prepared to be scanned, and expect any items you bring to be screened before you're allowed further inside.

Tip: Keep what you carry to a minimum. You'll pass through metal detectors, so be ready to remove metal items. Any bags will be X-rayed before entry.

The most common reason visitors get turned away at check-in is approval status. You must be pre-approved through the Missouri Department of Corrections visiting application before you attempt to visit anyone at ERDCC. That application includes a criminal history check. If you haven't been approved yet, the facility can deny entry even if you made the trip.

  1. Confirm the denial - Make sure your visiting application was officially denied (not just still in process).
  2. Write an appeal letter - If you want to challenge the decision, put your appeal in writing.
  3. Mail it within 30 days - Send your letter within 30 days to: Missouri Department of Corrections, Attn: Deputy Division Director of Adult Institutions, 2729 Plaza Drive, PO Box 236, Jefferson City, MO 65102.
