Immediate Steps After Report
- ✓ Avoid washing or changing clothes if evidence may exist - Escambia County policy states that when alleged sexual abuse occurred within a time window where physical evidence may be collected, staff will instruct the victim and the alleged perpetrator not to wash/shower, change clothes, or otherwise destroy potential evidence until cleared by the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office or Shift OIC.
- ✓ Expect the report to be treated as an allegation that triggers an investigation - the facility states sexual abuse complaints or threats are promptly reported and thoroughly investigated.
Once an allegation comes in - by email, phone, anonymous report, or any other channel - the facility's process kicks in. Reports are handled promptly and investigated thoroughly. Staff may also take steps to protect the person's safety and preserve any available evidence.
- Ask for medical help - with the inmate’s permission, Escambia County Jail states the inmate will be transported to a local hospital.
- Receive a private sexual assault examination - the facility states the hospital visit can include a sexual assault exam, testing, counseling, and treatment.
- Return to the facility after care is initiated - transport is arranged by the jail as part of this process (with permission).
After a hospital visit, the inmate receives follow-up medical and mental health care back at the facility. If the allegation is recent and physical evidence might still be collected, evidence-preservation matters. Staff may instruct both the victim and the alleged perpetrator not to wash, change clothes, or do anything that could destroy evidence until the Escambia County Sheriff's Office or Shift OIC clears them.
You don't have to go through this alone. Lakeview Center Victim Services provides emotional support to survivors. Reach them at (850) 469-3800 or visit 1201 W Lakeview Ave, Bldg. H, Pensacola, FL 32501. People inside the jail can call anonymously by dialing *7732 (*PREA) on the inmate phone system.
Confidentiality: Information identifying the victim and the details of a PREA report are shared only with staff who need to know - for the victim's welfare or for law enforcement investigation purposes.
