Before Your First Visit to FCI Elkton: What to Bring and What to Leave at Home
Your first visit goes smoother when you pack light. Use this checklist to avoid bringing something that could end your visit before it starts.
Not to Bring
- ✓ Weapons
- ✓ Explosives
- ✓ Drugs
- ✓ Intoxicants
- ✓ Currency
- ✓ Cameras (any type)
- ✓ Recording equipment
- ✓ Telephones
- ✓ Radios
- ✓ Pagers
- ✓ Other electronic devices
FCI Elkton prohibits these items on Bureau grounds: phones, cameras, weapons, drugs, intoxicants, and explosives. If you're visiting with children, remember the rules apply to everyone in your group.
Dress code issues are one of the most avoidable reasons visits go sideways. BOP guidance specifically prohibits revealing items: halter tops, bathing suits, see-through garments, crop tops, low-cut blouses or dresses, and leotards. If you're questioning whether something counts as revealing, choose a different outfit.
Skip anything that could be mistaken for inmate clothing. Khaki or green military-style clothing can look like inmate attire. Not sure how strict FCI Elkton is? Call ahead and ask what's allowed in the visiting room.
Entering FCI Elkton grounds (or even attempting to) means you consent to a search. This falls under Bureau of Prisons policy and federal regulations in 28 C.F.R. Part 511. Plan accordingly and leave anything questionable at home or secured off grounds.
Expect monitoring in the visiting area. The visiting room and its restrooms may be monitored for security purposes. Keep your expectations about privacy realistic while you're inside.
Before you make the drive, confirm current visitor requirements with the institution. Rules change. The safest approach: bring only what you know you'll need and leave everything else secured away so you're not scrambling at the gate.
Two things stop visits before they start: showing up with prohibited items and pushing back on the search process. FCI Elkton prohibits everyday items people carry without thinking (phones, cameras, other electronics) plus currency and contraband like drugs or intoxicants. Since entering the grounds counts as consent to search, expect screening and keep your pockets and bags simple.
Warning: The BP-A0224 visitor form warns that false statements can result in fines and/or imprisonment under 18 U.S.C. §1001.
