The "Account Number" field follows a specific format: the inmate's eight-digit register number followed immediately by their last name. No spaces, no dashes. It should look like this: 12345678DOE. Add punctuation, leave out a digit, or put a space between the number and name? The payment gets delayed or rejected.

You'll also need to fill in the "Beneficiary" field. Enter the inmate's full committed name here. Think of it as a double-check: the account number uses register number plus last name, while the beneficiary line uses the full committed name. Both fields need to match the person you're sending to.

The Receive Code for all Federal Bureau of Prisons ExpressPayment transfers is 7932. Use this exact code every time you send. When sending online, you'll enter Receive Code 7932 along with your amount (up to $300 per transaction).

For "Company Name," enter: Federal Bureau of Prisons. This is the payee MoneyGram uses to route ExpressPayment deposits into BOP commissary accounts.

For “City & State,” enter: Washington, DC. Even though your loved one is at FCI Terminal Island, this field is tied to the Federal Bureau of Prisons ExpressPayment setup.

MoneyGram ExpressPayment processes funds seven days a week, including holidays. Unlike some other payment methods, weekends and holidays won't slow things down.

When you send matters. Funds sent between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time post to the inmate's account within 2–4 hours.

Transfers submitted after 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time don't post overnight. They'll go through at 7:00 a.m. Eastern Time the next morning.

Online Limits First Time

  • Set up a MoneyGram online profile and account if it’s your first time using the online system.
  • Have a MasterCard or Visa credit card available, since one is required for first-time online setup.

Online transfers cap at $300 per transaction. If you need to send more, you'll have to split it across multiple payments.

Reminder: Double-check the account number format (eight-digit register number + last name, no spaces or dashes) and the beneficiary's full committed name before paying. A small typo can send your money to the wrong person or cause the transaction to fail.

Before you hit "submit" (or hand the form to the clerk), scan the three routing fields one more time: Receive Code 7932, Company Name "Federal Bureau of Prisons," and City & State "Washington, DC." If any of those are wrong, the payment may not land where you intended.
