FMC Lexington's Rules on What Visitors Can and Cannot Bring

Visiting someone at FMC Lexington goes much smoother when you arrive with as little as possible. Here are the BOP rules that most often get visitors turned away: prohibited items, medication handling, search consent, dress standards, and what to expect inside the visiting area.

Prohibited Objects

  • Weapons
  • Explosives
  • Drugs and other intoxicants
  • Currency
  • Cameras (of any type)
  • Recording equipment
  • Telephones (any type)
  • Radios
  • Pagers
  • Electronic devices

At FMC Lexington, these items are treated as prohibited objects on Bureau grounds and inside the facility. The goal is simple: prevent contraband, protect privacy, and keep the visiting room safe. If you're unsure about something, leave it behind before you reach the entry area.

Bringing medication? Plan for it to be handled at the start of your visit. You'll need to list all medications you're carrying, and everything must be left at the entry area - including prescriptions. Don't assume you can keep anything on you during the visit.

Tip: Bring medications in their original container with the prescription label so staff can identify and list them quickly.

Entering FMC Lexington - or even attempting to enter Bureau grounds - means you're consenting to a search. This applies to you and anything you're carrying. Staff treat search consent as a condition of entry, so if you're not comfortable with that, decide before you arrive.

Warning: If you refuse to be searched, you may be prohibited from entering Bureau grounds or facilities.

Your clothing can determine whether you get in. Wearing provocative or revealing clothing may get you turned away. When in doubt, aim for "family gathering" appropriate - simple, covered, nothing attention-grabbing. Don't lose your visit over the dress code.

  • Skip revealing or see-through clothing
  • Avoid crop tops, low-cut tops, and backless styles
  • Don’t wear very short shorts or skirts, or items with high splits
  • Leave hats/caps and sleeveless or halter-style tops at home
  • Avoid clothing that resembles inmate clothing (such as khaki or green military-type clothing)

Once inside, assume the visiting area is watched. FMC Lexington monitors the visiting room for security and good order - including restrooms in that area. Keep conversations and behavior appropriate for a monitored space.
