What to Bring (and What to Leave Behind) for a Visit to Formby State Jail
A smooth visit comes down to two things: the right ID and as little else as possible. Use the checklist below to avoid getting turned away at the door.
Visiting hours at Formby State Jail run Saturdays and Sundays, 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Treat that as the baseline, not a guarantee. Units can pause or change visits when something serious happens.
- ✓ Call Formby State Jail for final confirmation before you travel
- ✓ Ask whether visitation is temporarily restricted or discontinued due to security concerns, rule violations, lockdowns, escapes, disturbances, or a health and safety emergency
Traveling a long distance? Ask about an extended visit. The warden may allow up to four hours if you're coming more than 250 miles one way and space permits. Remote video visits are another option - up to 60 minutes once per month, scheduled through the vendor website.
Bring a current, government-issued photo ID if you're 18 or older. "Current" is the key word here - staff check that your ID is valid right now, not expired or unofficial.
At least one of your IDs needs to show your current physical address. The exception: certified victims of family violence with address protection through the attorney general. If that applies to you, bring your supporting documentation so check-in doesn't turn into a delay.
Bringing a minor? Plan ahead. When you call to confirm the schedule, ask what the unit expects for children and any paperwork they require.
Money and Searches
- ✓ Bring coins only (no cash bills)
- ✓ Keep it under $35 total in coins
The easiest way through entry screening: bring the bare minimum. Lock everything else in your vehicle before you approach the secure area. Not sure if something's allowed? Leave it in your car and ask when you call ahead.
No cell phones: Phones aren’t allowed inside the secure perimeter. Leave your phone outside the secure area so you don’t risk being denied entry.
The secure perimeter is a controlled area. Don't assume you can carry something in and sort it out later. If you're not certain an item is permitted, leave it behind before staff begin screening.
Wear something that won't slow you down at the door. On the fence about an outfit? Go more conservative. Getting turned away over clothing is an easy problem to avoid - call ahead if you're unsure what's acceptable.
Privacy and conduct: Visits are a privilege and can be restricted or discontinued for rule violations, security concerns, lockdowns, escapes, disturbances, or health and safety emergencies. Also, visits (except attorney-client visits) may be electronically monitored.
- Call before you leave - Visitors should call the unit for final confirmation before traveling.
- Ask what’s affecting visitation today - Visits can be restricted or temporarily discontinued for rule violations, security concerns, lockdowns, escapes, disturbances, or a health and safety emergency.
- Reschedule based on what staff tell you - If you’re turned away or a visit is canceled, get the next available option directly from the unit so you don’t make a second unnecessary trip.
Before you drive out, check for posted cancellations and call Formby State Jail to confirm. That last check can save you hours on the road if the unit has temporarily stopped visitation.
