What Happens During an RHU / Non-Contact Visit at Fox Lake

RHU/non-contact visits at Fox Lake run Monday–Friday from 2:30pm–5:00pm. That's the only weekday window, so plan around work or school pickup accordingly.

Weekends offer a longer window: 10:00am–5:00pm on both Saturday and Sunday. If you're traveling from out of town, weekends are usually your best bet. Request early and confirm your assigned time falls within that window.

To request an RHU/non-contact visit, email DOCDAIFLCIVisits2@wisconsin.gov or call 920-928-7004. I recommend email when possible - it gives you a written record of your request and any response.

Plan your group size before you request the visit. Fox Lake allows a maximum of six approved visitors per visit, and that total includes adults, minors, and infants - so a baby in arms still counts toward the six.

Even with an approved request, RHU visits can be limited or cancelled. The warden or designee can restrict a visit if they determine that either the incarcerated person's conduct or the visitor's conduct threatens institutional security. Behavior on either side of the glass matters.

  • Voluntary or administrative restrictive housing: Visits are limited to four hours per month and no more than one hour per week.
  • Cell confinement: Visits are not permitted.
  • Disciplinary Separation 3: Visits are limited to eight hours per month or one visit up to two hours per week.

Tip: Email DOCDAIFLCIVisits2@wisconsin.gov when you request an RHU/non-contact visit so you have written documentation of your request and any reply.

  1. Request the visit early - RHU/non-contact visits run in specific time windows, so don’t wait until the last minute to reach out.
  2. Match the time to the RHU schedule - Monday–Friday visits are 2:30pm–5:00pm, and Saturdays/Sundays are 10:00am–5:00pm.
  3. Ask what RHU status limits apply - voluntary/administrative restrictive housing, cell confinement, and Disciplinary Separation 3 each have different limits (including situations where visits aren’t allowed at all).
  4. Be ready for security-based changes - visits in restrictive housing may be limited or cancelled if the warden or designee determines the PIOC’s or visitor’s conduct threatens institutional security.
