What You Can't Bring to Fox Lake's Visiting Room (and Using the Lobby Lockers)
Most visitors who get turned away at the door trip up on a few common items. Here's what Fox Lake Correctional Institution won't allow in the visiting area — plus how to use the lobby lockers if you need to stash something last-minute.
Leave your outerwear behind. Coats, jackets, gloves, scarves, mittens, and hats - including ball caps - aren't allowed in the visiting area. Even lighter sweaters or sweatshirts with zippers or buttons may count as outerwear, so assume anything you'd wear for warmth will need to come off. You'll find coat racks near the visitor entrance inside the visiting room. Hang your items there before checking in and heading to your table.
Smart devices, internet-enabled gadgets, and any recording equipment are prohibited. If you show up with one, you'll need to secure it before going any further.
Keep it simple: no food, no keys, no paper currency (bills). Leave these in your vehicle or store them before entering.
Brought something you can't take inside? Fox Lake has lockers in the lobby for exactly this situation. It's your quickest option if you need to lock something up before check-in.
- ✓ Bring a U.S. quarter ($0.25) to operate the lobby lockers.
- ✓ If you plan to use the visiting-area vending machines, bring coins only (limit $20).
- ✓ Don’t expect your loved one to handle money or use the vending machines - PIOC cannot handle money during visits and aren’t allowed into the vending area.
Note: The institution is not responsible for personal property left in your vehicle or stored in the lobby lockers.
Visiting with a baby or have a medical need? Fox Lake allows a small set of essentials. For infants, you can bring: a comb, pick, or brush; up to two baby blankets; up to four diapers; up to two plastic baby bottles; prepared formula in an approved bottle; an infant seat or carrier; small baby wipes in sealed individual packs kept in a clear plastic bag; and a pacifier. A few personal items are also permitted: one coat, one pair of gloves, and a head covering (as long as it doesn't obscure your identity). You may also bring your Fox Lake locker key. For medications, prescribed items like inhalers, individual nitro pills (not in a bottle), and epinephrine injectors are allowed - as approved by the Director. Anything else that's critical needs approval from the on-duty supervisor before you enter. Other medications should be taken before you arrive.
Practical Tips
- ✓ Bring a quarter ($0.25) so you can use a lobby locker if you need one.
- ✓ Leave food, keys, and paper currency (bills) in your vehicle before you head in.
- ✓ Don’t bring smart internet-enabled devices or electronic recording equipment.
- ✓ Take off coats, jackets, gloves, scarves, mittens, and hats (including ball caps) before you try to enter the visiting area.
- Head to the coat racks by the visitor entrance - they’re located in the visiting room near where visitors enter.
- Hang up your outerwear and related items - coats and jackets, plus gloves, scarves, mittens, and hats (including ball caps), must be hung up.
- Check in only after your items are put away - items need to be hung up before you check in and go to your table.
Tip: Give yourself extra time to store items in a locker if you arrive with something that can’t go in. Remember: the institution isn’t responsible for belongings left in vehicles or in lobby lockers.
