This guide is for family and friends who want to visit someone in a Missouri Department of Corrections facility. Missouri DOC requires all visitors to be pre-approved through a visiting application. That applies even if you're local to the Fulton area, including Fulton Community Supervision.

Before you start, confirm you're applying for the right person at the right location. People transfer between institutions, so double-check the current facility using Missouri DOC's Offender Web Search. Then apply using the information you find there.

The Missouri DOC online visiting application (called the Friends and Family web application) starts by asking for the offender's ID number. If you don't have it handy, look it up first. The entire application is built around that number.

Clergy applicants: Don't use the online visiting application. You'll need to go through the clergy process instead of the standard online form.

Every field marked with an asterisk (*) is required. One key section asks you to agree to comply with Missouri DOC visiting regulations, including searches. Don't skip past it.

Tip: Read the visiting room regulations before you submit. Fixing issues up front is much easier than losing a trip over a rule you didn't know about.

If you're adding a minor child as a visitor, the online form still asks for an ID type and identification number. Missouri DOC's workaround: select "other" for the ID type, then enter "NA" for the Identification Number. One exception to know about: don't use the online application for a minor who would be visiting an offender restricted to "Adult Only" status. If that restriction applies, the online route won't work for getting the minor added.

  • Confirm whether the offender is restricted to “Adult Only” before you try to apply for a minor visitor (do not use the online application for that situation).
  • If the visitor is a minor child and the online application is appropriate, choose “other” for ID type and enter “NA” for the Identification Number.

Once you complete the application and click "Finish," Missouri DOC electronically sends it to the institutional case manager for processing.

Here's what to expect next: the offender is the one who gets notified of approval or denial. They're also responsible for letting you know the outcome, so keep an eye out for that message or call.

Denied? You can appeal by sending a letter within 30 days to the Missouri DOC Deputy Division Director of Adult Institutions (address listed on the DOC visiting page). You can also reapply for visiting status after one year.
