Before You Go: What to Bring (and What to Leave Home) for Hampden County Jail Visits
A little prep before you leave the house can save you a wasted trip. This guide covers what you need to get into the Main Institution—and what to leave behind so you don't get turned away at the door.
Bring a valid picture ID if you're 18 or older. Staff check it at the front desk, so a photo on your phone won't cut it - make sure it's current and official.
Travel light. The Main Institution requires you to leave personal belongings in your car or in the coin-operated lockers in the Public Lobby. That means coats, purses, cell phones, and keys. Show up with a bag you can't store or pockets full of stuff, and check-in slows down fast.
Reminder: The Hampden County Sheriff’s Office isn’t responsible for items that are lost or stolen from cars or lockers.
You'll pass through a metal detector before entering. If you're wearing anything metal-heavy, expect to remove it or store it before you can proceed.
Officers may also conduct a pat search. If you're not comfortable with that, you can leave instead - but you won't be able to complete your visit.
No consumables inside: Don’t bring gum, candy, food, or drinks of any kind into the Main Institution.
Don't assume small items won't matter. Attempting to bring contraband into the Main Institution - drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, weapons, or anything similar - can lead to arrest and criminal prosecution.
