Before Your First Visit to Hutchins Unit: A Practical Pre-Trip Checklist
Your first visit can feel overwhelming—especially when you're worried about getting turned away at the door. This quick checklist helps you confirm the visit is happening, bring the right ID, and avoid the most common
Before you start the drive to Hutchins Unit, call the unit to confirm the person you’re visiting is assigned there and that visitation hasn’t been canceled. This last-minute check can save you a wasted trip - an eligible inmate can’t receive visitors if visitation is canceled.
If you’re 18 or older, bring a current, official government-issued photo ID for check-in. Staff will use it to verify your identity before you’re allowed into the visitation process.
Make sure at least one of the IDs you use shows your current physical address. There is an exception for victims of family violence who have been certified by the attorney general for address protection, but otherwise you’ll want to double-check your ID before you leave home.
Don’t bring paper cash into the secure perimeter. If you want money for vending, bring coins only - up to $35.
Pack light. Inside the secured perimeter, the allowed basics are a small wallet, a clear plastic bag or change purse, and up to $35 in coins. Vending machines are available in the visitation areas, so coins are the practical way to plan for snacks or drinks during your visit.
