How to Get Approved to Visit Someone at North Idaho Correctional Institution (NICI)
Getting approved to visit at NICI takes some planning upfront, but the process is straightforward once you know the steps. Here's how to apply, what to expect, and when you'll hear back.
Visiting someone at North Idaho Correctional Institution (NICI) for the first time? The main hurdles are timing and paperwork. You'll need to submit a visiting application, pass a background check, and get approved before you can show up. This guide covers what to do and when - so you don't waste a trip.
If your loved one just entered IDOC custody, hold off on the application. Residents can't have visitors during reception and classification. IDOC also asks that you wait until classification is complete before applying. Why? Classification determines housing placement, and your application needs to go to whatever facility they end up at - which may or may not be NICI.
You can apply online or by paper. The online Visiting Application is faster. Either way, submit your application to the facility where the resident is housed. If they're at NICI, send it to NICI - not a different IDOC facility.
Documents Needed
- ✓ Complete the visiting application (adult visitor)
- ✓ Submit the application to the institution where the resident is housed (NICI, if the resident is at NICI)
- ✓ Review the Visiting Rules for Residents and Visitors before you apply and before you try to visit
- ✓ A copy of the court order granting legal guardianship, or a Power of Attorney Delegating Limited Powers for Visitation
- ✓ A certified copy of the minor’s birth certificate
After you submit your application and the background check kicks off, expect to wait two to four weeks. Factor that into your planning if you're coordinating around work, childcare, or travel.
You probably won't get a call or email about the decision. IDOC's process puts that responsibility on the resident - they're the ones who notify you once the background check is complete.
If you have questions about the application process for NICI, you can contact the facility directly. NICI’s warden is Aaron Krieger. Email: nici@idoc.idaho.gov. Phone: 208-962-3276.
Before heading to NICI, read the Visiting Rules for Residents and Visitors and make sure your application has been approved. Show up without approval and you'll likely be turned away - meaning another trip on another day.
Heads up: Visiting hours and schedules can change because of weather and/or emergency situations. Confirm the schedule before you travel.
Reminder: All potential visitors must complete a background check before visiting NICI, and the full process normally takes two to four weeks.
