The Complete Mail Checklist for Jackson County Detention Center (What You Can and Can't Send)

Every envelope needs complete sender and recipient information - full name and address on both sides. Missing or incomplete details can stop your mail cold. Double-check your postage before dropping it in the mailbox.

Note: Don’t include coded messages or coded phrases in your letter. Keep your writing clear and straightforward so it doesn’t get flagged.

Photos Rules

  • Include no more than 3 photos per mailing
  • Keep each photo at 4" x 6" or smaller
  • Use real photo paper only (no computer-printed photos)

Photo restrictions: Photos will be rejected if they're pornographic, depict criminal activity, or are deemed contrary to the facility's penological interest.

Ink Markings Paper

  • Write handwritten letters in blue or black ink only
  • If you type your letter, print it with black ink or toner only
  • Use plain paper only (no colored paper)

Note: Don’t use markers or colored inks, and don’t add drawings, stickers, or coloring pages.

Prohibited Items

  • Greeting cards of any kind (birthday, holiday, etc.)
  • Bubble wrap, staples, paper clips, pamphlets, or sticky notes
  • Stamps, blank paper, or envelopes (extras inside the mailing)
  • Cash or money orders
  • Copied puzzles

The jail can return items even if they're not specifically listed as prohibited. Administration has discretion to reject anything they consider inappropriate or unacceptable.

Want to send a book? It must be paperback and shipped directly from the publisher to the inmate. Hardbacks aren't allowed, and neither are books sent from your home address.

Keep your mail clean and plain. Letters with any foreign substance or stains will be rejected - that includes perfume, lipstick, lip gloss, or cologne. Nothing extra on the paper.

Bottom line: Administration can return anything they consider inappropriate, even if your intentions were good.
