How Phone Calls Work from Missouri Prisons (and How to Block Unwanted Calls)
Phone calls from Missouri prisons are outgoing only, routed through a phone vendor system that requires authentication before dialing. Once you understand how funding works—and what to do if you need calls to stop—you can handle most phone issues quickly.
You can't call into a Missouri prison and get connected to someone inside. It doesn't work that way. Instead, the person in prison places outgoing calls using an automated security system that requires their personal identification number (PIN). Calls go through an established phone vendor and can be collect, debit, or prepaid.
There are a few ways to pay for calls. The person inside can buy debit minutes through the canteen or at a kiosk. You can also set up an account with Securus - Advance Connect lets you add money to a specific bill-to number (BTN) ahead of time. Some facilities allow calls through a phone app on offender tablets, including JPay tablets powered by Securus Technologies. Depending on what's available, calls might come from the regular phone system or the tablet app.
All phone calls are monitored for security. Assume anything you say can be heard and reviewed later. Keep conversations focused on safe, practical topics.
Warning: Toll-free calls and three-way calls can lead to disciplinary action for the offender. Phone access can also be limited if the offender is on restricted status or assigned to a segregation unit.
- Listen to the automated prompts during the call - Missouri’s system includes options for people receiving calls.
- Follow the prompt to block future calls to your residence - once you select the block option, future calls to that phone number should stop.
If calls keep coming after you've used the phone prompts to block them, contact the institution directly. Share as much detail as possible - your phone number, when the calls came in, and anything that helps staff identify the caller. Since every call requires PIN authentication, the institution can often trace the calls and address the unwanted contact.
