Can You Send Books to Jefferson County Jail? What’s Allowed and Which Address to Use
Yes — but Jefferson County Jail has specific rules about what kinds of books and publications are allowed and where they need to be mailed. Sending to the wrong address is one of the fastest ways to get items returned.
Jefferson County Jail allows certain publications, but the source and format matter. Inmates can receive pre-approved legal, educational, or religious publications - paper or paperback only - when sent directly from a not-for-profit charitable organization. New, unused non-fiction paperback books are also allowed, but they must ship directly from a seller or distributor. Books mailed from a personal address won't be accepted.
Don’t send anything sexually explicit: Sexually explicit photographs or materials depicting sexual activity or displaying genitalia or breasts are prohibited.
Books and publications from a seller, distributor, or approved organization should go to the Golden P.O. Box address. Include the inmate's full name and their JCID number if you have it: Inmate's full name Inmate JCID number (if known) P.O. Box 16700 Golden, CO 80402-6700
Don't confuse the publications address with the personal mail address - they're different. As of February 15, 2024, all personal mail (letters, pictures, drawings, and other correspondence) must go to the Securus Digital Mail Center for Jefferson County Jail at PO Box 25938, Tampa, FL 33622. Include the inmate's name and ID number, and make sure your full name and address appear in the return address. Incorrectly addressed envelopes get sent back.
How delivery works: Personal mail sent through the Securus Digital Mail Center gets digitally scanned and then appears on module kiosks and tablets for the inmate. Mail clearly marked "Legal Mail" is handled separately and isn't scanned the same way.
If a book or publication gets rejected, the sender can appeal. The appeal must arrive within 15 days after the jail mails the rejection notice. Once received, the Sheriff (or a designee) will issue a written decision within 21 days.
Want to donate recreational reading books for the jail's library? Drop them off at 200 Jefferson County Parkway, Golden, CO 80401. For questions about donations, call 303-271-5444.
