Getting an Inmate’s Property, Glasses, or Medication at Jefferson County Jail

At booking, staff inventory and store all clothing and personal items. This happens at intake for every person brought into the Detention Services Division facility - which is why you can't just walk in and grab someone's belongings without the proper release steps.

Storage space is limited. If belongings don't fit in the standard property bag, the jail won't store the extras. The inmate has to choose: have someone pick up the excess, mail it out at their own expense, or have it disposed of.

Before you can pick up property, the inmate must designate you on a release form. Jefferson County Jail requires this paperwork naming you as the authorized person.

Once you're on the release form, head to the detention facility visitor lobby to pick up the property.

If your loved one needs eyewear, the lobby accepts a limited amount during normal business hours: one pair of reading glasses and one pair of eyeglasses or contacts. Bring more than that, and you'll likely be turned away with the extras.

The lobby also accepts unopened medications and prostheses during normal business hours. Emphasis on unopened - partially used medication won't be accepted.

1. Submit an administrative kite - The inmate must send a request (called an administrative kite) if they want essential medications at release.
2. Do it at least five days before release - The jail must receive the kite five days prior to the release date to accommodate the request.
3. Request the three-day supply - Upon release, the inmate can request a prescription for three days’ worth of essential medications.
