Why Johnson County Mail Goes to Florida, and How Legal Mail Is Different
If you were surprised to see a Florida address for Johnson County mail, you're not alone. The detention center routes most personal mail through an off-site scanning process. Legal mail is handled differently and must be sent directly to the jail in Olathe.
When you send regular (non-privileged) mail through USPS to someone at Johnson County Adult Detention Center, it doesn't go straight to the facility. Instead, it's processed off-site, then delivered electronically to the inmate on password-protected kiosks or tablets. That's why the mailing address for regular letters and cards is in Florida, not Kansas.
MailGuard: The MailGuard® service is free. You can sign up for a free MailGuard® account to track delivery status, get notified about rejected mail, and download copies of processed mail.
Need to add money to an inmate's account? Johnson County has lobby kiosks that accept cash or credit/debit card deposits. They're available daily from 7:00 am to 10:00 pm. You'll need the inmate's six-digit Criminal File Number (CFN) to make a deposit.
To send non-privileged USPS mail through the off-site MailGuard process, address it exactly like this: Inmate's Name - Inmate's CFN C/O Smart Communications Johnson County Sheriff's Office P.O. Box 9176 Seminole, Florida 33775-9176
Legal (privileged) mail works differently. Mail from an inmate's attorney must be clearly marked, sent through the USPS, and addressed directly to the Johnson County Adult Detention Center in Olathe. Do not send legal mail to the Florida P.O. Box.
Certain other items also go to the physical detention center, not the off-site mail address. Non-privileged pre-approved packages, newspapers, and magazines from friends or family should be addressed to the inmate's name and CFN at: Johnson County Adult Detention Center 101 North Kansas Ave Olathe, KS 66061
If your mail is fully or partially rejected, the inmate will receive a written notice explaining the reason (or reasons) for the rejection.
