What to Bring to Your First IDOC Visit: The Two-ID Rule and What Counts
First-time IDOC visits go smoother when you show up with the right paperwork. Here's what to bring—and what staff will verify at check-in.
Adult visitors need two forms of ID - IDOC calls it the
One of those IDs must be a current state-issued photo ID. Staff also verify your date of birth, so bring documentation that clearly shows your DOB. This trips up a lot of first-time visitors who arrive without it.
Minors: Visitors under 18 are not required to show a photo ID at any IDOC facility.
You'll need to provide vehicle information at check-in. Even if you're not driving, jot down the make, model, and plate number before you leave home - saves you from running back to the parking lot.
Check-in is more than a sign-in sheet - it's identity verification. Expect staff to ask you to confirm details like your date of birth while reviewing your photo ID.
Plan to arrive at least 10 minutes before your scheduled time. That buffer covers any lines or check-in questions without putting your visit at risk.
If you're 18 or older, you must complete a Prospective Visitor's Interview (PVI) form (DOC 0148) before visiting. Legal visitors and government officials are exempt. On your first visit, you'll fill this out at check-in unless you've already been approved through the electronic PVI process.
Save time: Download the DOC 0148 PVI form ahead of your visit - it's available in English and Spanish. Filling it out beforehand speeds up processing.
Be truthful on the PVI: False information can lead to your visitation privileges being restricted or revoked.
