Adult visitors need two forms of identification. At least one must be a current state-issued photo ID.

You'll need to share basic vehicle information at check-in. Also, if this is your first visit to an IDOC facility, adults (18 and older) must complete a Prospective Visitor's Interview form (DOC 0148) unless you already received approval through the electronic PVI process.

Prohibited and Lockers

  • Electronic devices (cell phones, tablets, smart watches)
  • Food
  • Drinks
  • Smoking materials
  • Currency
  • Packages
  • Purses
  • Bags
  • Books
  • Magazines
  • Sunglasses
  • Personal keys

If you bring something that can't go into the Visiting Room, small lockers are available in the Visiting Center. That said, I recommend keeping it simple. Leave extra valuables at home or locked in your car, since you won't be able to keep much with you during the visit.

Quick reminder: Your phone, purse, food, and personal keys are not allowed in the Visiting Room. Use the small lockers in the Visiting Center if you arrive with these items.

Infant Items Clear Bag

  • Up to three diapers and wipes
  • One blanket
  • Up to two filled clear plastic bottles, or up to two sealed containers of baby food (or one of each)
  • One change of clothes
  • One bib
  • One pacifier
  • One plastic spoon
  • One clear empty cup with lid
  • One coat or jacket and one hat
  • One pair of gloves or mittens (in appropriate weather)

Clear bag rule: All infant and toddler items must be stored in a clear bag or a plastic container.

Don't bring pills or medication into the Visiting Room. The only exceptions are physician-prescribed heart medication and asthma inhalers, and they must be in properly labeled containers. If you carry any required lifesaving medication, let staff know right away. It will be delivered to and held at the officer's station in the visiting room.

Medication tip: If you need to bring heart medication or an inhaler, keep it in its properly labeled container and let staff know at check-in so it can be handled correctly.

Dress appropriately. Religious headgear approved under IDOC rules is allowed, but any other headgear requires advance permission.

  1. Write a request to the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO): Submit it at least 10 days before your visit.
  2. Explain why you need the headgear: Include your reason and any supporting documentation you have.
  3. Wait for approval before you arrive with it: If you do not submit the request on time, the request can be denied.
