Before You Go to Larned: What to Bring and What Will Get You Turned Away
Visiting Larned goes smoother when you show up with the right ID, leave prohibited items behind, and know what gets a visit denied or cut short. Here's your quick checklist before you head out.
Bring a government-issued photo ID - a driver's license or state ID card works. Staff verify your identity before letting you into the visiting area, so unofficial IDs won't cut it.
Bringing a visitor under 16 who doesn't have photo ID? A state-issued birth certificate works. Toss it in with your other paperwork the night before so you're not scrambling at the door.
Non-U.S. citizens without a U.S. or state government photo ID need a valid passport or visa. Without one, your visit stops before it starts.
You can be searched. Larned conducts visitor searches to keep contraband from entering or leaving the facility. Empty your pockets and plan your bag accordingly before walking in.
- ✓ Cell phones
- ✓ All tobacco and tobacco-related items
Note: If you refuse to submit to a search (per IMPP 12-115), the shift supervisor can deny, suspend, or terminate the visit.
Show up under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and the shift supervisor can deny your visit - or end it once it's started. If there's any chance you might appear impaired, reschedule. Getting turned away can create bigger problems for future visits.
ID problems are a common reason for denial. Refuse to provide sufficient identification, fail to produce it, or falsify information, and your visit can be denied, suspended, or terminated.
Once inside, rule violations can end your visit. If staff determine you've broken facility rules, the shift supervisor can deny, suspend, or terminate visitation. Follow instructions the first time and keep things calm.
Bringing kids? You're responsible for supervising them the entire time. Visits can also be denied or ended if you or your child appears ill - don't risk the drive if someone is clearly sick.
Sometimes it's not about you. Visits may be denied, suspended, or terminated if the visiting area is full. Build flexibility into your day in case you need to wait or try again.
Watch contact: Excessive physical contact is a stated reason a visit can be denied, suspended, or terminated.
Keep physical contact brief. A quick embrace or kiss at the start and end of your visit is allowed - hand-holding is not.
- Set expectations before you leave - tell everyone going that contact is limited to a brief hug or kiss at the start and end.
- Name the “no” clearly - remind your group that hand-holding isn’t allowed, even if it feels harmless.
- Give a quick reminder at the door - a 10-second refresher right before you go in helps prevent a visit-ending mistake.
Reminder: Since contact is restricted, crossing that line can be treated as excessive physical contact - and that can get a visit ended.
