Understanding Incentive Levels at Larned: Who Can Visit at Each Stage

Visitation privileges at Larned are tied to the resident’s incentive level: Intake, Level I, Level II, or Level III. The level they’re assigned determines which categories of people can be approved to visit them.

If this sounds confusing, you're not alone. Think of it as KDOC's way of organizing privileges by stage - giving staff and families a clear set of rules to follow.

Understanding Incentive Levels at Larned: Who Can Visit at Each Stage

Intake Level1

  • Attorneys
  • Clergy
  • Law enforcement
  • One designated primary visitor
  • Immediate family members (as defined by KDOC: parents and step-parents; siblings including half- and step-siblings; spouses of siblings; children including step-children; spouses of children; grandchildren including step-grandchildren; great-grandchildren including great step-grandchildren; spouse; parents of spouse; grandparents; and, in some cases, a person who served as a de facto parent if confirmed by the warden/superintendent)
  • If the resident is married (by license or common law), the spouse must be listed as the primary visitor
  • If the resident is unmarried, they may choose any primary visitor who is at least 18 and is not the primary visitor for another resident
  • The resident can change their primary visitor every six months

Tip: If your loved one is on Level I, find out who's listed as their primary visitor before planning a trip. Married residents must list their spouse. Unmarried residents can choose any adult - but only if that person isn't already someone else's primary visitor.

Once a resident reaches Level II or Level III, visiting privileges expand. They can receive visits from anyone on their approved list - not just a limited set of categories.

"Approved" is the key word here. Every prospective visitor must complete an application, and the facility runs a criminal background check before adding anyone to the list. Until that approval comes through, you won't be allowed in.

  1. Have the resident request the visiting form - The resident gets the visiting request form from their unit counselor and mails it to the people they want to add.
  2. Complete and return the paperwork - Each prospective visitor fills out the form and mails it back to the facility for review.
  3. Wait for approval and the background check - The facility completes a criminal background check and approves (or denies) the application. Visits can’t happen until approval is granted.

Note: Don't travel until you've confirmed your application was approved. Unapproved visitors will be turned away at the door.

Each resident can have up to 20 people on their approved visiting list. If your family is large, it helps to plan ahead so the most consistent visitors are the first ones added.

The "primary visitor" rule matters most at Level I. That level limits visits to immediate family, one primary visitor, attorneys, clergy, and law enforcement. If the resident is married (by license or common law), their spouse must be the primary visitor. If they're unmarried, they can choose any adult - as long as that person isn't already listed as another resident's primary visitor. They can change this designation every six months.
