Video Visit Rules in Illinois DOC Facilities: What You Can and Can't Do
Video visits make staying connected easier, but Illinois DOC has strict rules that can end a call fast. Here's a quick
In Illinois DOC facilities, an individual in custody may receive only 1 video visit per day. If you’re trying to coordinate multiple family members, plan around that daily cap - stacking visits on the same day isn’t allowed.
There’s also a weekly limit: an individual in custody may receive only 2 video visits per week. That limit still applies even if the person is in restrictive housing - those visits count against the same weekly allotment.
For individuals in general population or protective custody status, no more than three approved visitors are allowed per video visit. Keep in mind that visit limits still apply overall, so the best approach is to coordinate who’s joining ahead of time so you don’t waste one of the person’s limited visit slots.
Assume everything said and shown during the call is reviewable later. Illinois DOC states that all video visits are monitored live and recorded, so your safest move is to treat the video visit like an in-person visit: keep the conversation appropriate, and keep the camera on you (and anyone who’s approved to participate).
Reminder: Recording a video visit by a participant is prohibited and may lead to termination of the visit.
